BGP Leak Leads to Spike of Misdirected Traffic

On 11 March 2024, Russian mobile operator MTS PJSC (AS8359) leaked tens of thousands of BGP routes learned from HKIX (Hong Kong Internet Exchange, AS4635), misdirecting traffic for destinations around the world.

First spotted by our friends over at Qrator Labs, this BGP leak, which began at 07:56 UTC, affected companies peered at HKIX (AS4635).

Kentik’s aggregated NetFlow data, depicted in the attached graphic, revealed a large spike in traffic volume directed along the BGP edge 8359_4635, showing the operational impact of the latest routing snafu.

The top three destinations for the misdirected traffic was Hong Kong, Indonesia and Australia.
