Fiber cut knocks out service in Mexico

January 6, 2022
A key fiber optic cable connecting Mexico to the United States was cut yesterday impacting the Mexican internet for over three hours.

According to Kentik aggregated NetFlow data, Telmex (AS8151) experienced an outage beginning at 17:45 UTC (11:45am CST) and lasting until 21:00 UTC (3pm CST)on 5 Jan 2022.

BGP observers noticed a drop in the overall size of the global routing table yesterday and initially theorized that it was due to the country-wide internet shutdowns in Kazakhstan. However the outages in Kazakhstan have not involved the withdrawal of large amounts of BGP routes.

The outage in Mexico was also spotted by Cisco’s BGPstream service and can be viewed in CAIDA IODA.
