From an “HR team of one” to a cultural architect

When Courtney first joined, she was our only HR presence. She wasn’t just “handling HR”; she was building the entire foundation of how we work, interact, and support one another. She navigated the complexities of onboarding and benefits, but more importantly, she championed the “Be You” mentality that defines us today.

Now, as our Senior Director of People and Places, Courtney’s influence is woven into the very fabric of Kentik. Whether it’s launching our IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness) committee or architecting our remote-first infrastructure, her goal has always been the same: creating a space where every employee feels they truly belong.

A leader who models our values

To understand Courtney’s impact, you have to look at how she leads. Libby Wolfensperger, our VP of People and Places, shares what makes Courtney such a vital part of the team:

"Courtney is unique as a leader because she can remain deeply focused and effective, while still creating an environment where people feel truly supported. Her growth from a one-person HR team to Senior Director has been inspiring; she consistently proves you can be a model of professionalism and hard work while being a fun, positive force."

"More than just managing HR, she has instilled the values of a productive 'Kentikan' into the company’s DNA. She is an inspirational instigator and a caring and effective role model for everyone on this team."

Get to know Courtney: The heart of the people team

To celebrate her decade at Kentik, we sat down with Courtney to chat about her ten-year journey, how she transitioned from an engineering background to building a world-class culture, and some of the fun quirks that make her such a beloved leader.

How did you get into your field of work?

Believe it or not, I have a degree in mechanical engineering! My love for supporting people eventually led me to HR, but that problem-solving mindset stayed with me.

We know how much you care about making Kentik a place where everyone feels they belong. Is there a specific initiative or project you’ve spearheaded that really hits home for you?

IDEA at Kentik. It is our internal committee all about creating space for inclusion and diversity across the entire organization, so everyone feels seen, heard, and valued for who they are.

How did you find your way to the West Coast?

I was born in Vietnam and grew up in the Bay Area. My family briefly immigrated to Chisholm, Minnesota, in 1981. After three years of -20 degree weather, we decided our tropical blood types couldn’t handle it anymore!

What drives you?

I love working with a team that takes the initiative to solve problems and improve together.

If money and time were no object, what would you be doing right now?

I’d be traveling the world, learning about new cultures and food. Hiking Machu Picchu is at the very top of my list.

What’s the last song you played, and your favorite cartoon character?

Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey and Bart Simpson because he hasn’t aged in 37 seasons!

Why the “Be You” mentality matters

Courtney’s journey proves what’s possible when you bring your full, authentic self to work. At Kentik, we don’t believe in fitting a mold; we thrive because people like Courtney lean into our “Be You” philosophy.

By showing up exactly as she is, someone who leads with a genuine heart for others and a natural drive to solve complex problems, Courtney did more than just watch us grow from the sidelines. She channeled that authenticity into becoming a primary engine of our success. We are so lucky to have her leading the way for the next decade.

Happy tenth anniversary, Courtney!
